The American embassy in Turkey is closed on Monday due to a “security threat”. It is not clear what kind of threat is involved.
The embassy informed American citizens that the Ankara office is not accessible to the public. They are also asked to “not stand out too much”.
Tensions
The relationship between the United States and Turkey is currently stiff. There are tensions because the US supports Kurdish YPG militias in the fight against the Islamic State in northwestern Syria. Ankara regards the YPG as a branch of the terrorist Kurdish PKK.
In 2013, the American embassy in Ankara was the target of a suicide attack by an extreme leftist group in which a death fell.
The counter will open again when the services can be resumed. This can be read in a safety message that was sent out.
