The political crisis in the Maldives is gaining momentum. According to local press, the police arrested two judges of the Supreme Court of the country. The day before, former President Momun Abdul Gayum was detained.
Since February 5, the state of emergency in the island state, the parliament has suspended work. The state of emergency was introduced after the Supreme Court ruled to release a number of political leaders from prison. The incumbent president, as well as representatives of the prosecutor’s office, the police and the armed forces, said that in this way the opposition is preparing impeachment of the head of state.
The US Department of State and the head of the British Foreign Ministry have already stated that they are worried about the situation in the Maldives, the Rossiya 24 television channel reports. They call on the President of the Maldives, the army and the police to implement the decisions of the Supreme Court of the country.
