“Tragedy Strikes UNLV: 3 Dead, 1 Wounded in Campus Shooting; Suspect, Former Professor, Killed by Police”
In a devastating incident on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) campus, three individuals were killed, and one was wounded in a Wednesday afternoon shooting, according to police. The suspect, identified as a white male in his sixties and a former college professor, was shot and killed by officers who responded promptly, assuring there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill revealed in an evening news conference that the suspect’s identity is known but will not be released until the families of the victims are notified. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.
The active shooter situation unfolded around 11:45 a.m. local time, originating on the fourth floor of Beam Hall. Officers engaged the suspect, averting potential further harm. During the incident, a gathering outside Beam Hall, where people were eating and building Lego sets, heightened the risk, but swift police response prevented additional casualties.
In addition to the three fatalities, one person with a gunshot wound is in stable condition, while four others suffered panic attacks and were hospitalized. Two police officers sustained minor injuries during the search for potential victims.
Sunrise Hospital Trauma Center received three patients from the shooting, and a reunification center was established for families unable to contact their loved ones.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are assisting in the investigation. UNLV will remain closed for the week, with further decisions pending on reopening.
President Biden addressed the shooting, expressing condolences and calling for increased measures to address the “epidemic of gun violence.” Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and UNLV President Brian Sandoval conveyed their condolences, describing the incident as tragic and heartbreaking. Sandoval declared it an “unimaginably sad and shocking day” for the state, emphasizing solidarity with the victims’ families.
