Tragedy Strikes UNLV Campus, Forcing Cancellation of Men’s Basketball Game at Dayton
Dayton, OH – In the wake of a mass shooting that claimed three lives at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), the scheduled men’s basketball game against Dayton has been canceled. The incident unfolded earlier in the day, with police confirming the death of a suspected shooter and critical injuries to a fourth person.
Dayton expressed condolences and solidarity with UNLV, urging fans to keep the affected community in their thoughts and prayers. The decision to cancel the game reflects the somber atmosphere following the tragic event.
The UNLV campus, located less than two miles east of the renowned Las Vegas Strip, was thrust into chaos after reports of an active shooter surfaced at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday. Adam Garcia, UNLV’s police chief, revealed that alerts were swiftly disseminated across the campus as local and campus police raced to the scene—Beam Hall, housing UNLV’s Lee Business School.
In a tense confrontation, two university detectives engaged the suspect in a shootout, resulting in the assailant’s demise. Authorities issued an all-clear approximately 40 minutes after the initial report of an active shooter.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill underscored the potential for further tragedy, noting that students had congregated outside the targeted building for recreational activities. He credited the decisive actions of law enforcement for preventing additional loss of life.
“No student should have to fear pursuing their dreams on a college campus,” Sheriff McMahill emphasized.
Despite the swift response, authorities have yet to disclose additional details about the shootings, the victims, the suspect, or a possible motive. The UNLV community and the nation at large await further updates as investigations into this harrowing incident continue.
Due to the tragic events unfolding on UNLV’s campus, tonight’s men’s basketball contest between UNLV and the University of Dayton will not be played. Further information will be released when available. We ask that our fans keep the UNLV community in their thoughts and prayers.
