“Indecent demonstration” or “protest against sexualization”?
Tyler County, Texas, indicted the streaming service Netflix for “deliberately promoting visual material containing an obscene display of the genitals of a clothed or partly clothed child who was under 18 at the time. The created visual material has no serious artistic, political or scientific value. “
The streaming service opposes the allegations and states:
“Cuties” is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children. This accusation is unfounded. We will continue to support this film.
Maimuna Dukur’s film Cuties tells the story of an 11-year-old girl whose family moves from Senegal to Paris. Joining a local dance group, the girl tries to escape the dictates of her conservative family.
In August, Netflix had already been accused of pedophilia propaganda for a movie poster featuring teenage girls as sexual objects. After a wave of criticism, the service changed the poster to a neutral one, apologizing for the old one and explaining that it incorrectly reflected the main idea of the film.
