Pink Reveals Life-Altering Overdose Experience: A Journey from Addiction to Stardom
In a candid interview with Cecilia Vega on 60 Minutes, renowned pop sensation Pink delved into a harrowing chapter of her life, recounting a near-fatal drug overdose that transpired on Thanksgiving in 1995—just weeks before she clinched her inaugural record deal.
The 44-year-old artist unreservedly disclosed her tumultuous upbringing, marked by perpetual strife between her parents. She recalled, “I was a punk. I had a mouth. I had a chip on my shoulder.” As her domestic environment continued to disintegrate, Pink found herself ensnared in the world of drugs, even resorting to selling them. This path eventually led to her expulsion from her family home and prompted her to drop out of high school.
Pink acknowledged that she was “off the rails” prior to her life-altering overdose, which transpired at a Thanksgiving rave in 1995. She recounted the toxic concoction of substances in her system that fateful night: “I was on ecstasy, angel dust, crystal, all kinds of things. Then I was out. Done. Too much.”
Vega inquired if the artist “almost died,” to which Pink solemnly confirmed, “Yeah.”
This near-death experience became a pivotal turning point for Pink. She promptly ceased her usage of “hard drugs” and remarkably, within a few weeks, secured her first record deal with her R&B girl group, Choice.
Pink’s unflinching candor regarding her history of substance abuse has been a recurring theme throughout her career. In 2012, she shared her story with Shape Magazine, underscoring that she was never hospitalized after her overdose. Instead, it served as the wakeup call that catalyzed her journey toward recovery. She poignantly reflected, “I remember getting up off the floor in the morning – and that was the last time I ever touched a drug again.” Furthermore, she attributed her resilience to the opportunity presented by a DJ who allowed her to sing on hip-hop night, provided she abstained from drug use. She succinctly summarized, “That’s the thing with me – once I make up my mind, I’m done.”
Pink’s journey from the brink of death to global stardom serves as a powerful testament to her determination and unwavering commitment to turning her life around, ultimately crafting a triumphant narrative of resilience and redemption.
