Molly Ringwald Reveals Daughter’s “Iconic” Conception in Studio 54 Dressing Room
Actress Molly Ringwald is sharing a personal story about the start of her motherhood journey. In an interview with The Times, Ringwald, 56, revealed she believes her eldest daughter Mathilda, 20, (shared with husband Panio Gianopoulos) was conceived in the dressing room of Studio 54, right after her run playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret back in 2003.
“It’s so Mathilda to be conceived in such an iconic place,” Ringwald said with amusement.
The interview also delved into Ringwald’s experience with motherhood. While always wanting children, she admitted it took longer than expected. “I was 36 when she was born,” Ringwald shared. “The biological clock is a real thing, and it had become quite loud.”

The actress also discussed the biggest challenge of motherhood: losing control of her time. “As an actress, I’ve always traveled and embraced instability,” she explained. “But that’s not ideal for raising kids. It’s something I constantly work on, and thankfully, my husband is a planner and brings stability to our lives.”
Ringwald previously spoke to People about Mathilda’s foray into acting, with a supporting role in Michael Showalter’s film “The Idea of You.” When asked about passing the torch, Ringwald, a veteran actress herself, highlighted the importance of preparation and kindness in the industry. Mathilda chimed in, acknowledging her mom’s valuable lessons: “Everything! Be prepared to wait and be nice, which you should always be anyways.” Ringwald added with a smile, “Remember people’s names.”
