“Michael Fassbender Takes Center Stage in Upcoming Biopic on Irish Rap Outfit ‘Kneecap'”
Renowned actor Michael Fassbender is set to headline a biographical film centering on the rising Irish rap sensation, Kneecap, whose music is a unique blend of nationalist Irish rap, touching on the harsh realities of growing up in Northern Ireland post the Troubles.
The movie, aptly titled “Kneecap,” promises to be a raucous anti-establishment comedy, a fact exclusively confirmed by Variety back in May. In this cinematic venture, real-life Kneecap members Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí will portray exaggerated versions of themselves, bringing their fiery personalities to the big screen.
Kneecap catapulted to fame in 2018 with their distinctive musical style, which often delves into the gritty, unvarnished truths of Northern Ireland’s post-conflict landscape. Notably, in 2019, the group stirred controversy when they led chants of “Get the Brits out now” at a pub Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, had visited the day before.
The film is under the adept direction and writing of Rich Peppiatt, known for his work on “One Rogue Reporter” and even a music video for the band. Peppiatt, who has promised a portrayal true to Kneecap’s hedonistic and anarchic spirit, shared his excitement about the project.
A joint effort between Mother Tongues Films and Fine Point Films, the production sees Jack Tarling from Mother Tongues and Trevor Birney from Fine Point as producers, with Patrick O’Neill from Wildcard as the co-producer. Financial backing for the project comes from the BFI (via National Lottery funding), Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán, TG4, and Northern Ireland Screen, with the collaboration of Great Point Media and Curzon.
For international sales, French agency Charades is representing the film, while Curzon and Wildcard are responsible for distribution in the U.K. and Ireland. This exciting cinematic venture is set to shed light on Kneecap’s music and the controversial journey that brought them to the forefront of the Irish rap scene.
Michael Fassbender is set to star in the new Kneecap (@KNEECAPCEOL) biopic, which will have a sneak preview at the Belfast Film Festival next month.https://t.co/RpGTfAGrCU
