Johnny Depp (58) returns to the director’s chair 25 years after his debut. The actor is going to direct a film about the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, he tells entertainment magazine ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.
“It was a life full of great hardships, but triumphs in the end”
The film Modigliani , based on the play by Dennis McIntyre, is about the life of the painter and sculptor in Paris in 1916. The artist, who at the time has little confidence in his own abilities, experiences 48 hours that change his life and make sure he eventually becomes a great one. Shooting should start next spring in Europe.
Johnny calls it an ‘honour’ to be able to translate the life story of Amadeo Modigliani to the silver screen. “It was a life of great hardship, but ultimately triumphs. That’s a universal story that all viewers can identify with.”
The actor directed his first feature film, The Brave , in 1997 . In it he was seen together with Marlon Brando. He also gets help from a big star at Modigliani . Al Pacino will co-produce the film.
Johnny also has to go to court again soon. Both he and his ex Amber Heard will appeal after the monster trial earlier this year.
