1920, in the Irish countryside. The Anglo-Irish twins (Ireland’s independence is proclaimed the following year) Rachel and Edward live a strange existence in the ruined family estate. Every night, the property becomes the focus of a sinister presence; The Lodgers (“the boarders”) who impose three rules on the twins: they must be in bed at midnight – they can not allow a stranger to cross the threshold – if one escapes, the life of the other is endangered. When Sean, a veteran of the Great War, returns to the nearby village, he is immediately attracted to the mysterious Rachel, who then begins to break the rules.
