Director Spike Lee is currently working on a musical film about the origin of the erection pill Viagra. Lee bases his story on an article that journalist David Kushner published on the subject in Esquire magazine , Variety reports Tuesday.
The film will feature songs written by composer duo Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald, who previously created the Broadway show Passing Strange . It is not yet known who will play the leading roles.
It is not the first musical that Lee will make: the director recently filmed the musical show American Utopia , based on the performance of the same name by former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne.
Lee became known for his activist films about African Americans and racism in the US, such as Da 5 Bloods , Malcolm X , Do the Right Thing and BlacKkKlansman . For the last film, from 2018, the director received an Oscar for best screenplay.
It is not yet known which title will be given to Lee’s latest film. It is also unclear when it will appear.
