Johnny Briggs died on Sunday after a long illness at the age of 85, PA Media reports Sunday, based on a statement from his family. The actor was best known for his role in the British series Coronation Street .

Briggs played the character Mike Baldwin in the British soap opera between 1976 and 2006, which has been on television since 1960.
In 2006, the actor received the British Soap Lifetime Achievement Award for his thirty years in the series. A year later he was awarded a royal decoration by the British Queen Elizabeth for his services.
Besides Coronation Street , Briggs has also appeared in other series and movies. The actor has appeared in The Saint , Agatha Christie’s Marple and in the theater in Cinderella .
Coronation Street is about the everyday life of the residents of Coronation Street in Weatherfield, an imaginary working-class neighborhood in the Manchester area. In 2010, the soap opera took the title of the world’s longest-running TV soap opera from the American soap opera As the World Turns .
The series was shown in the Netherlands at the VARA between 1967 and 1975. From 2010 onwards, SBS6 showed for some time the experiences of the characters from Coronation Street .
