Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in film version musical Wicked

The lead roles in the film version of Broadway musical Wicked are played by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The two announced this on Instagram on Thursday .

Grande shared a photo of a bunch of pink and green flowers, the colors of their characters Glinda and Elphaba, which she had received from Erivo.

Erivo, in turn, posted a photo of the bouquet in the same colors Grande had given her. “Dear Cynthia, calling this an honor is too weak a word. Can’t wait to give you a hug. See you in Oz!”, the singer wrote on the card.

Wicked opened on Broadway in 2003 and is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West . That’s yet another retelling of the story from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , the 1900 classic that was made into a movie in 1939 under the title The Wizard of Oz , starring Judy Garland. The film version is directed by Jon M. Chu, whose musical adaptation In the Heights was released earlier this year .

The plot of Wicked is written from the perspective of the witches of the land of Oz, evil witch Elphaba and good witch Glinda. Erivo, who earlier this year appeared as Aretha Franklin in the miniseries Genius , will play Elphaba and Grande will take on the role of Glinda.
