Antonio Banderas receives the International Star Award from the Palm Springs International Film Festival for his leading role in the Spanish film Dolor y gloria . The actor will receive the prize on January 2, the organization announced on Tuesday via Twitter .

“During his career, Antonio Banderas has received international recognition for his memorable achievements,” said festival director Harold Matzner.

“In Pain and Glory (the English translation of Dolor y gloria , ed.), Banderas again and again expresses the aging director Salvador Mallo, who is going through a creative crisis while looking back at the choices he has made in his life.”

Previous recipients of the International Star Award include Javier Bardem, Nicole Kidman, Helen Mirren, Gary Oldman and Saoirse Ronan. South African Charlize Theron also receives an International Star Award in January for its role in the American film Bombshell .

Other prizes will go to Jennifer Lopez, Joaquin Phoenix, Martin Scorsese and Renée Zellweger during the 31st edition of the annual festival in January.
