After years of rumors, an American version of the Eurovision Song Contest will become reality in 2021. The organization announces that the idea is that representatives of different states will compete against each other.
The American Song Contest should be performed for the first time around Christmas 2021. As the plan now looks, artists from different states have to qualify for the semifinals in five to ten broadcasts. The states that survive the semifinals compete against each other in the grand final.
Martin Österdahl, executive supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest, says it is high time for the United States to have the opportunity to experience the Eurovision Song Contest. “We are happy to have found the right partners to create a new version that Americans and fans worldwide can love.”
The team that will set up the American Song Contest includes producer Ben Silverman, known for his work on series such as Ugly Betty , Jane The Virgin and the American version of The Office , and Christer Björkman, who editions of the Song Festival from 2013 and 2016 in Sweden.
The 2020 Eurovision Song Contest was canceled due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The festival will take place in Rotterdam next year, after the victory of Duncan Laurence on behalf of the Netherlands in 2019. The 2021 edition will be held on 18, 20 and 22 May.
