A drawing of a girl by Vincent van Gogh on Monday at a Christie’s auction in New York yielded 10.4 million dollars (8.7 million euros). It concerns the drawing La Mousmé , of which Van Gogh also made a painting, which hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
According to the auction house, it was one of the best drawings ever made by Van Gogh. Christie’s pre-estimated the proceeds of the work at $ 7-10 million.
It was drawn in the summer of 1888 in Arles, France. Van Gogh was inspired for the work by Japanese art and Pierre Loti ‘s novel Madame Chrysanthème .
Who the buyer is has not been disclosed. Christie’s also did not report who sold the drawing. According to The Art Newspaper , the drawing comes from the collection of London-based art house Thomas Gibson.
