Tragic Shooting Incident Unfolds at Philadelphia SEPTA Bus Stop
Philadelphia, PA – In a harrowing incident on Monday afternoon, a teenager lost their life while four others sustained injuries during a shooting at a SEPTA bus stop, according to local authorities.
The shooting transpired around 3:45 p.m. at the SEPTA bus stop near the intersection of Broad Street and Godfrey Avenue. The 17-year-old male victim, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, was the apparent target of the attack, as stated by Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel during a media briefing on Monday. The victim’s identity has not been disclosed to the public.
Two 15-year-old boys suffered graze wounds, while a 71-year-old woman was shot in the head, and a 49-year-old woman sustained a grazing injury to the right forearm, police reported.
The incident unfolded with approximately 20 school-aged children present at the bus stop when two assailants approached and opened fire. The women who sustained injuries were on board the bus at the time of the attack, according to Bethel.
“The bus is stopped. People are starting to board the bus, and that’s when we have two individuals come up and start to fire,” Bethel explained, noting that the shooting took place at a busy intersection, with multiple rounds discharged. He added that the situation could have been even more catastrophic.
As of Monday night, no arrests had been announced by the police. A SEPTA spokesperson addressed the rarity of such incidents within the transit service but emphasized that even one occurrence is deemed unacceptable.
“This was a horrific incident that claimed one life and left several others injured, including two women on the Route 6 bus who were just trying to go about their day,” said SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch in a statement to NBC Philadelphia.
