Tracy Wakefield, Widow of Red Sox Pitcher Tim Wakefield, Passes Away Just Months After Husband’s Death
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Tracy Wakefield, widow of the late Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield, has succumbed to an undisclosed cause, the team announced on Wednesday. The devastating news comes merely five months after the demise of her husband.
“It is with deep sadness that we share that our beloved mother, daughter, sister, niece, and aunt, Stacy, passed away today at her home in Massachusetts,” expressed Stacy Wakefield’s family in a poignant statement released through the Major League Baseball team.
The family emphasized the unimaginable loss, particularly in the wake of Tim’s passing. “Our hearts are beyond broken,” the statement continued, detailing that Tracy was surrounded by family, friends, caretakers, and nurses during her final moments.
Remembered as a “strong, loving, thoughtful, and kind person, who was as down-to-earth as they come,” the Wakefield family acknowledged their luck in having her in their lives. They sought solace in the belief that Tracy would be reunited with Tim, the love of her life.
Expressing gratitude towards the medical team who supported Tracy from diagnosis to her final moments, the family requested privacy to grieve. The cause of her death was not disclosed.
The couple’s health struggles became public in September when Tim Wakefield’s former teammate Curt Shilling revealed on a podcast that both Tim and Tracy had been diagnosed with cancer. However, the couple clarified that this information was shared without their permission.
Tim Wakefield, a two-time World Series champion and a pivotal figure in the Red Sox’s history, passed away in October at the age of 57 due to brain cancer.
The philanthropic Wakefields, known for their community work, are survived by their children, Trevor, 19, and Brianna, 17. Their commitment to charitable causes, including the Red Sox Foundation and Boston’s Jimmy Fund, where they made a significant impact, has left a lasting legacy. Lisa Scherber, the director of patient and family programs at the Jimmy Fund Clinic, attested to the couple’s unwavering dedication even during their health challenges, stating, “Their goal was to help as many kids as they could, and later, when they were both in this situation, they didn’t stop.”
