Stephen Colbert Reflects on Previous Jokes About Princess Catherine Before Cancer Revelation
In a recent episode of “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert took a somber turn as he addressed jokes made about Catherine, Princess of Wales, prior to her recent announcement of undergoing cancer treatment.
During his March 25 broadcast, Colbert spoke earnestly about the on-air quips he made regarding the former Kate Middleton’s absence from public life following planned abdominal surgery in January.
Acknowledging the impact of his remarks, Colbert stated, “For the last six weeks to two months, everybody has been talking about the mystery of Kate Middleton’s disappearance from public life. Two weeks ago, we did some jokes about that mystery … When I made those jokes, that upset some people, and even before her diagnosis was revealed.”
Expressing regret for any offense caused, Colbert emphasized a commitment to sensitivity, particularly in the face of personal struggles. “I do not make light of somebody else’s tragedy,” he asserted.
Although unaware of Kate’s diagnosis at the time of the jokes, Colbert recognized the gravity of cancer diagnoses and extended well-wishes for her recovery.
Kate’s health announcement came amid speculation surrounding her absence from public life and fueled by internet rumors. In a rare social media appearance on March 22, she revealed her cancer diagnosis, following earlier successful surgery believed to be unrelated to cancer.
Colbert’s acknowledgment of his past remarks echoes similar sentiments from other public figures. Actor Blake Lively, for instance, apologized on Instagram for previously mocking Middleton’s “Photoshop fails” after learning of her health battle.
As celebrities reflect on their past comments, Kate’s diagnosis serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy and sensitivity, especially in the public eye.
