Shania Twain reveals her harrowing experience of being airlifted to the hospital during the pandemic, describing the situation as “very scary.”
Shania Twain expresses gratitude for surviving a severe bout of Covid and pneumonia during the pandemic, which required her to be flown to the hospital for treatment.
The singer-songwriter draws inspiration from her “dangerous” and “scary” experience, which included difficulty breathing, to create a new track, Inhale/Exhale Air, on her upcoming album, Queen of Me.
The 57-year-old artist was at her home in Switzerland when her health began to deteriorate.
Twain describes the progression of her symptoms to The Mirror, stating “It was progressively getting worse. My vital signs were getting worse.” The interview was conducted ahead of the release of her album, Queen of Me, on Friday.
Twain recounts the difficulties her husband, Swiss businessman Frédéric Thiébaud, faced in securing a hospital bed for her during her illness, stating that he spent “hours and hours on the phone every day” trying to make it happen. She describes the situation as a “real nightmare” for her.
Twain reflects on the importance of having support during a difficult time, saying “I thought, ‘Wow, if I was living alone in a more isolated scenario, I don’t know what would have happened’. My heart goes out to people who don’t have that support to help them get the right care.”
Twain recounts the events that led to her divorce with her first husband Robert “Mutt” Lange in 2008. According to her, Thiébaud, who was married to her close friend, broke the news to her that Lange and Marie-Anne Thiébaud were having an affair.
Twain and Thiébaud developed a close bond over the situation and eventually got married in 2011.
Twain describes the experience of being flown to the hospital as feeling like “science fiction” and “going to another planet or something,” and that it all happened in “slow motion.”
While in the hospital, she received plasma therapy. Twain explains the danger of her situation, saying “It took several days to start building up any antibodies at all, so it was a very dangerous time and very scary.”
Twain has faced health scares in the past, including contracting Lyme disease in 2003 and undergoing two open-throat surgeries.
Her sixth studio album, Queen of Me, is set to be released on Friday
