Renowned British Composer Laurie Johnson, Composer of ‘The Avengers’ Theme, Passes Away at 96
London, January 16 – Laurie Johnson, the esteemed British composer known for creating the iconic theme for “The Avengers” and contributing to a multitude of film and television scores, peacefully passed away in his sleep at the age of 96, as announced by his family.
Laurie Johnson was one of the last prominent figures in English film composition during the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s. His impressive body of work included scoring Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove” in 1964 and composing for films such as “Tiger Bay” (1959), “I Aim at the Stars” (1960), “First Men in the Moon” (1964), and “Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter” (1972).
However, it was Johnson’s musical contribution to “The Avengers” that truly elevated his status. Joining the series in its fourth season in 1966, he continued to score virtually every episode, a remarkable feat considering the weekly demand for around 30 minutes of recorded and synchronized music. His influence persisted even after major cast changes, remaining with the series through its sixth season and the introduction of the character Tara King.
When “The New Avengers” premiered in 1976, Johnson revisited the original theme while crafting an entirely new piece for the series. This late-night airing in America in 1978 marked another chapter in his illustrious career.
While best known for “The Avengers,” Johnson’s impact extended to numerous British television productions. Notable works include the theme for “Top Secret” (1961), scores for series like “Shirley’s World” and “The Professionals,” and four TV movies based on Barbara Cartland novels, aired between 1987 and 1991.
Born on February 7, 1927, in Hampstead, England, Laurie Johnson studied at the Royal College of Music and spent four years in the Coldstream Guards. Apart from his contributions to film and television, he wrote non-film works later in life, leaving behind a rich musical legacy.
In a statement, the Johnson family expressed, “Laurie’s music touched the lives of millions around the world. Throughout his illustrious career, he composed numerous iconic scores, themes, and soundtracks that graced our lives across film, TV, theatre, and radio.”
Survived by his wife Dot, a daughter, son-in-law, and grandson, Laurie Johnson will be remembered as an extraordinary individual who brought joy to many through his passion for music, kindness, and infectious sense of fun and laughter.
