The abuse was verbal and emotional. “A red line was crossed and my brain was suddenly switched to a switch, I knew it would be very difficult, but I just could not go on,” Witherspoon reported. She was very young at the time and the decision to defend herself would have resulted in a profound change in her personality. “I could never have been the person I am today,” said the 41-year-old.
