The academy’s prestigious honorary Goya Award was set to be presented to Carlos Saura during the annual ceremony.
The Goya Awards, held by the Spanish Film Academy, paid homage to the late and legendary filmmaker, Carlos Saura, on Saturday. Saura, who passed away at the age of 91 on Friday, was scheduled to receive the academy’s distinguished Honorary Goya Award at the annual ceremony. Sadly, he could not be present to accept the award in person, but the award was bestowed upon him posthumously and his widow, Eulalia Ramón, read out a statement on his behalf. The statement was composed by Saura himself before his death, expressing his regret for not being able to attend the ceremony, “I am sorry I cannot be with you”.
Saura’s work earned him international recognition in the 1960s, as he fearlessly criticized the dictatorship of Franco through his films. The Spanish Film Academy took to Twitter to announce his passing, stating that he had died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. The academy went on to describe Saura as “one of the most important filmmakers in the history of Spanish cinema”, a testament to his lasting impact and legacy.
