Netflix Greenlights Third Season of Japanese Thriller Series ‘Alice in Borderland’
In an exciting announcement, Netflix has officially given the green light for the production of the highly anticipated third season of the dystopian Japanese thriller series, “Alice in Borderland.” The news was unveiled by Kim Minyoung, Netflix’s Vice President of APAC Content, during the second day of the APOS conference held in Indonesia.
Based on Aso Haro’s manga series of the same name, “Alice in Borderland” takes viewers on a gripping journey following the character Arisu, who finds himself transported to a parallel universe where his very survival depends on winning various high-stakes games. These games are categorized into four groups, each represented by a suit from a standard deck of playing cards. The original manga was serialized in Japanese weekly comic books, “Weekly Shonen Sunday S” and “Weekly Shonen Sunday,” spanning from 2010 to 2016.
Sato Shinsuke, known for his directorial expertise in films such as “Gantz,” “Inuyashiki,” and “Death Note: Light Up the New World,” as well as TV series like “Kingdom” and a “Death Note” mini-series, has been confirmed to return as the director for the third season. Netflix assures fans that Sato’s involvement will ensure the series maintains its trademark intensity and cinematic excellence.

The series made its debut with the first season in December 2020, quickly becoming one of Netflix’s top ten most-watched shows in nearly 40 territories across Asia and Europe. The second season, which premiered in December 2022, achieved even greater success by becoming Netflix Japan’s most-watched title ever, surpassing all anime titles. It consistently ranked in the top 10 in over 90 countries and claimed the number one spot in 17 of them, accumulating a staggering 200 million viewing hours worldwide.
