Netflix has temporarily halted its streaming service in Russia in protest against the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops. “Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our services in Russia,” Netflix said.
Earlier this week, the streaming service announced that it would temporarily suspend all future projects and acquisitions from Russia. Netflix had four Russian ‘Netflix Originals’ in the works, among other things.
The streaming service previously refused to offer 20 Russian channels that it had to host under Russian law. Now the company is taking the extra step to completely discontinue its service.
Russia is a small market for Netflix. The company has less than a million subscribers, while the streaming service has 222 million subscribers worldwide.
TikTok decided earlier today to temporarily suspend the ability to upload new videos and start live streams in Russia. The video app decided that because of the new strict laws on spreading “fake news” that Russia passed last week.
