Israel Stands Firm on Gaza Offensive Despite International Pressure
Jerusalem, March 8, 2024 — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Thursday that Israel will persist with its offensive against Hamas, extending its reach into the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Despite mounting international pressure urging a cessation of hostilities, Netanyahu remains resolute in his commitment to dismantle Hamas.
The decision comes in the aftermath of a deadly attack by Hamas fighters on southern Israel on October 7, claiming 1,200 lives and abducting 253 individuals, according to Israeli reports. In response, Israel launched a widespread offensive, resulting in over 30,000 casualties in Gaza, as estimated by Palestinian health authorities. The international community has condemned Israel’s actions, with calls for an immediate halt to the military campaign.
Facing growing global scrutiny, Netanyahu emphasized the need for unity, stating, “There is international pressure and it’s growing, but particularly when the international pressure rises, we must close ranks, we need to stand together against the attempts to stop the war.”
Rafah, located on the southern fringe of Gaza near the Egyptian border and housing an estimated 1.5 million people, has become a focal point of the conflict. Many residents sought refuge in Rafah after fleeing their homes further north to escape the Israeli military offensive.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony for Israeli army officers, Netanyahu asserted that Israel would continue operations throughout Gaza, declaring Rafah as the “last Hamas stronghold.” He also dismissed attempts to attribute Hamas’ crimes solely to Israel, describing it as a “calculated attempt” that requires a robust response.
“Whoever tells us not to act in Rafah is telling us to lose the war, and that will not happen,” Netanyahu affirmed, underscoring Israel’s determination to press forward despite international objections.
