Mark your calendars! Flames of Memory event scheduled for December 1-3 at National D-Day Memorial, featuring Two Nights of Christmas in Wartime for the first time. Don’t miss this unique commemoration.
As darkness descends over the Blue Ridge Mountains, the National D-Day Memorial is set to pay homage to the 4,415 men lost on D-Day during the Flames of Memory 2023 event. Scheduled nightly from December 1 to 3, between 5 PM and 9 PM, the memorial aims to illuminate the grounds with thousands of luminarias, honoring the fallen heroes of Overlord and acknowledging their ultimate sacrifice for freedom.
Spread across the Memorial’s landscape, the luminarias will create a poignant visual tribute, inviting visitors to stroll through the illuminated grounds or drive around the circle to view the heartfelt display from their vehicles.
In addition to Flames of Memory, guests attending on Friday and Saturday evenings will have the unique opportunity to step back in time with “Christmas in Wartime.” This special presentation offers a glimpse into Christmas 1944 on the frontlines, featuring re-enactors and living history displays that capture the spirit of how soldiers celebrated the holidays during World War II. G.I. Santa is set to make his annual appearance on Saturday, adding a festive touch to the historical re-creation.
Admission to the event is free, with donations gratefully accepted. Flames of Memory 2023 is made possible through the generous sponsorship of BWX Technologies, Inc., Steel Dynamics, Framatome, the Bedford Area Welcome Center & Department of Tourism, and the Town of Bedford, Virginia.
The National D-Day Memorial encourages the community to join in this solemn yet uplifting tribute, fostering remembrance and appreciation for the sacrifices made on D-Day and throughout World War II.
