The 19-year-old American who attacked New York cops with a machete on New Year’s Eve is charged with attempted murder of cops at the federal level. The federal prosecutor announced this on Tuesday.
The radicalized man, Trevor Bickford, wanted to carry out a jihadist attack on officers during the celebration in Times Square, where thousands of people gathered. In an interrogation, he admitted that he wanted to kill a cop.
Three officers were injured, but not life-threatening. Eventually, the police shot the man in the shoulder, after which he was arrested.
Attorney General Merrick Garland praised the bravery of the injured officers. He spoke of “a terrible attack”.
