South Florida Rapper Kodak Black Released After Federal Judge Sentences Him for Probation Violation
MIAMI – Kodak Black, the renowned South Florida rapper, was released from jail on Wednesday following a federal judge’s decision to sentence him to time served for a probation violation. This ruling comes nearly two weeks after a drug possession charge against him was dismissed in Broward County.
U.S. District Judge Jose E. Martinez in Miami delivered the verdict, taking into account the recent dismissal of the drug possession charge in Broward County. Broward County Circuit Judge Barbara Duffy had ruled that prosecutors could not dispute Kodak Black’s (real name Bill Kapri) legitimate oxycodone prescription, obtained from a pharmacy.
The arrest that triggered the probation violation occurred in December when Plantation police found Kapri asleep at the wheel with white powder around his mouth. Initially presumed to be cocaine, a subsequent lab test revealed it was oxycodone, for which Kapri had a valid prescription obtained in July 2022.
This arrest constituted a violation of his probation from a separate case, leading to a two-month imprisonment in Miami. In 2022, Kapri faced charges of oxycodone trafficking and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He was released on bond with the condition of regular drug testing.
Earlier last year, Kapri was ordered into a 30-day drug rehab program after missing a drug test and testing positive for fentanyl. A warrant for his arrest was subsequently issued in June when he failed to appear for another drug test.
In January 2021, then-President Donald Trump commuted a three-year federal prison sentence for Kodak Black, who had served approximately half of his sentence for falsifying documents used to purchase weapons.
Known as Kodak Black, Kapri has achieved significant success in the music industry, selling over 30 million singles. His chart-topping hits include “Super Gremlin,” which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022. Despite his legal challenges, Kodak Black continues to make an impact in the music world.
