A truck driver who caused a fatal accident in April 2019 has received a 100-year reduced sentence in the United States. That happened after fierce protests broke out, including Kim Kardashian (41) who spoke out strongly against the 110-year prison term imposed on the Cuban immigrant earlier this month. Thanks in part to her efforts, and those of thousands of others, Rogel Aguilera-Mederos now ‘only’ has to sit for 10 years. This is reported by various American media.

Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, 26 at the time, was driving a truck and drove into a traffic jam more than two years ago because his brakes gave out. The accident killed four people and injured several others. A jury found him guilty and a judge sentenced him to 110 years in prison. Colorado Governor Jared Polis decided on Thursday to reduce the “arbitrary and unlawful” sentence by 100 years to 10 years in prison.

“The length of the prison sentence was simply disproportionate to your actions, nor to punishments imposed on others for similar crimes,” he wrote in a letter to Aguilera-Mederos.

Kim says via social media that she is “grateful for this decision”. “Thank you Governor for reducing this sentence. Although his sentence is now 10 years, in principle he can be free in 5 years and join his wife and son.’

The reality star recently passed her ‘baby bar’ exam, taking her first step towards a possible future as a lawyer. She hopes to follow in the footsteps of her late father Robert Kardashian, who was also a lawyer.

More than 4.5 million Americans had called on the governor to reduce the sentence in an online petition. With the act, Polis hopes that ‘confidence in the fairness of the criminal justice system will be restored’.
