Jessica Chastain Clarifies Mask-Wearing Wasn’t a Political Statement at Award Shows
Actress Jessica Chastain has clarified that her decision to wear a mask at award shows was not intended as a political statement. The Zero Dark Thirty star, aged 46, addressed the criticism she received for wearing a face mask during the past award season, where she also starred in Henrik Ibsen’s renowned play, A Doll’s House, on Broadway.
Chastain explained that due to the rigorous COVID-19 testing protocols on the show, if someone tested positive, even without symptoms, they would be unable to perform for a week. Considering the international visitors attending the stage door, she felt it was essential to take precautions and prevent any potential disruptions to the production. Her commitment to safety garnered her a Tony Award nomination.
However, not everyone understood her reasoning. Chastain revealed that she faced backlash for wearing a mask at events like the Oscars, with some people mistakenly assuming she was making a political statement. In response, Chastain expressed her confusion about the misconceptions surrounding her actions.
During the conversation, fellow participant Josh Groban interjected, assuring her that those involved in theater understood her precautionary measures. Chastain shared a lighthearted moment, mentioning that someone at the stage door had given her a mask that read, “I’m On Broadway.” Despite the criticism she faced at events like the SAG Awards and the Oscars, Chastain emphasized her determination to prioritize her health and continue performing without missing a show.
Earlier, during the Golden Globe Awards, a Twitter user had posted a picture of Chastain wearing a mask that matched her stunning silver gown, humorously commenting on her ability to avoid COVID-19. Chastain playfully retweeted the post, expressing relief.
It is evident that Chastain’s commitment to safety and well-being, rather than any political motives, guided her decision to wear a mask during award shows.

Jessica Chastain’s Red Carpet Masking at Golden Globes and Oscars
Jessica Chastain attended the Golden Globes red carpet and shared her rationale for wearing a mask at the event. The actress explained that she was currently performing in the play A Doll’s House in New York, taking on the role of Nora. In order to protect her health and not let her fellow cast members down, Chastain opted to wear a mask at the star-studded occasion.
The importance of caution in the theater community was highlighted as some other stars, such as Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Jamie Lee Curtis, contracted the virus shortly after the awards ceremony.
Chastain continued her masked appearances by pairing a black mask with her Gucci gown at the Oscars. However, during the red carpet moments and while presenting the award for Best Actress, she chose to go without a mask.
