Quebec director Jean-Marc Vallée won his first DGA Awards last night for the Big Little Lies series presented on HBO.
This is an important recognition as the Directors Guild of America represents the directors. Mr. Vallée was recognized by his peers.
Featuring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and many others, the series was in the “Movies for Television and Mini-Series” category. In addition to Big Little Lies , the finalists in this category were Godless , The Wizard of Lies , The Story of a Girl and The Immortal Life oh Henrietta Lacks.
For Mr. Vallée and all the team of the series, this prize is added to many others, including four Golden Globes and eight Emmys, obtained since the beginning of the galas season.
A second season of Big Little Lies is in preparation and Mr. Vallée remains associated as executive producer. It was recently announced that Meryl Streep would join the cast for this second year.
In addition, Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro won the Best Director of the Year award with The Shape of Water . This feature, which leads the list of nominees (13 categories) for the Oscars, was finalist with the films Lady Bird, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Dunkirk and Get Out.
Hosted by Judd Apatow, the 70th DGA Awards ceremony was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
