“Our initial plan was to create only three seasons,” reveals the co-creator and star of the show.
During a recent episode of the Fly on the Wall podcast, Jason Sudeikis, co-creator and star of Ted Lasso, made a definitive statement about the show’s narrative. He expressed, “This story is complete,” in a conversation with hosts Dana Carvey and David Spade. Sudeikis emphasized the authenticity of his response, explaining, “It might sound like a diplomatic answer, but it’s genuinely the truth. Initially, we only planned for these three seasons, but then it evolved into this massive phenomenon.”
The season 3 finale of Ted Lasso, which aired this week, carried a sense of finality akin to a series finale, providing glimpses into the future of various characters, including Jason Sudeikis’ eponymous soccer coach.
According to Sudeikis, the Ted Lasso team has pondered potential spin-offs. He mentioned the possibility of a book or podcasts that offer audio commentaries on the episodes, delving into the show’s themes in a more intellectual manner than he could personally convey. Sudeikis expressed openness to spin-off opportunities, although no official confirmation has been provided by Apple TV+ regarding the show’s future.
Sudeikis has previously discussed his initial vision of a three-season arc for Ted Lasso, acknowledging the potential for the show’s extensive ensemble cast to continue their stories in some capacity. In a 2021 interview with EW, he expressed gratitude for the network’s commitment to funding those three seasons while remaining uncertain about what lies beyond.
