Tensions Rise as Israel Sets Ultimatum for Hostage Release in Gaza
In a significant development, Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz issued a warning, stating that unless Hamas releases all hostages held in Gaza by March 10, a ground offensive will be launched in the southern city of Rafah. This marks the first time Israel has specified a potential timeline for its troops to enter the densely populated area, home to approximately 1.5 million Palestinians.
Global opposition is mounting against the prospect of an offensive in Rafah, with concerns over the well-being of civilians. The United Nations public health agency reported that a crucial Gaza hospital, Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis, north of Rafah, has ceased functioning following an Israeli raid. The World Health Organization (WHO) expressed frustration, as it was denied entry to assess the situation, emphasizing the impact on healthcare infrastructure.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) justified their operation in Nasser as “precise and limited,” alleging that Hamas was using hospitals for terrorist activities. Benny Gantz, a former defense minister, declared on Sunday that if the hostages are not released by the start of Ramadan on March 10, the fighting will escalate, including in the Rafah area. He emphasized a coordinated approach to facilitate civilian evacuation, working in collaboration with American and Egyptian partners to minimize casualties.
The Israeli war cabinet, comprising top security officials, was formed in response to a Hamas-led attack on Israel in October, resulting in casualties and hostages. Gantz’s reference to Egypt raises speculation about potential Palestinian evacuations to the Egyptian side of the border, though details of such a plan are yet to be disclosed.
With just three weeks remaining before Ramadan, reports from Rafah indicate some people leaving, while many are uncertain about their next steps. Despite international warnings, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains steadfast in vowing a ground assault on Rafah to eliminate Hamas gunmen.
Concerns have been raised by Egypt and other Arab countries, warning that an Israeli offensive could force Palestinians into Egypt, an outcome deemed unacceptable. Saudi Arabia has threatened “very serious repercussions” in the event of a storming of Rafah.
Amid ongoing hostilities, efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas are underway in Cairo. However, despite a request from US President Joe Biden, negotiations have faced challenges, with Hamas accusing Israel of hindering progress towards a ceasefire deal. The conflict, ongoing since October, has resulted in extensive damage in the Gaza Strip, with thousands of casualties reported.
