Renowned Jazz singer Marlena Shaw, acclaimed for hits like “California Soul” and “Woman of the Ghetto,” passed away at the age of 81,
As announced by her daughter Marla Bradshaw in a heartfelt video on Facebook. The beloved artist, who influenced genres spanning jazz, soul, disco, and R&B, departed peacefully while listening to her favorite songs.
Bradshaw shared the sad news, emphasizing that her mother’s passing was serene and that the family finds solace in the peaceful transition. Marlena Shaw gained prominence in the 1960s after catching the attention of Chess Records, where she recorded the iconic “California Soul” before transitioning to a more jazz-oriented label.
Throughout her illustrious career, Shaw’s music resonated across generations, with her lyrics reflecting the strength of the Black American community and Black women during a tumultuous period of racial divide in the nation’s history. Having produced 17 albums with eight different record labels, Shaw’s impact extended far beyond the realm of music, as her songs became featured and sampled in various media.
Verve Records, with whom Shaw collaborated in 1987, expressed sorrow over her passing and celebrated her enduring legacy. In a Facebook statement, the label acknowledged her significant contribution to their history and highlighted the timeless appeal of her work, especially “California Soul.”
Marla Bradshaw shared that she and her twin sister had joyfully celebrated their birthdays with their mother the day before her passing, providing a poignant final opportunity for Marlena Shaw to spend precious moments with her loved ones. As fans mourn the loss of this musical icon, her daughter concluded, “Miss Shaw is in heaven.”
