Helen Reddy, known for her hit I Am Woman , passed away on Tuesday at the age of 78. What the Australian singer and feminist died of has not been disclosed, Variety reports .
In a statement, Reddy’s daughter Traci Donat and son Jordan Sommers said she passed away in Los Angeles. “She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and an endearing woman. Our hearts are broken, but we find comfort in the thought that her voice will live on forever.”
Reddy released I Am Woman in 1972 . The song symbolized the then emerging feminist movement. The song won the singer a Grammy Award.
She also scored hits with Delta Dawn and Angie Baby . Reddy also appeared in various television series and films. I Am Woman , a feature film about the singer’s life , was released in 2019 .
In 2015, Reddy was diagnosed with dementia. She had stopped performing thirteen years earlier, because her voice had become deeper and she said she could no longer sing her well-known hits.
