Taking center stage at the 69th Taormina Film Festival in Sicily, Amber Heard made a powerful return to the silver screen with the highly anticipated premiere of her latest project, “In the Fire.” The psychological thriller delves into the supernatural realm, captivating audiences with its enigmatic storyline.
As Heard walked the vibrant turquoise carpet, carefully selected to mirror the stunning hues of the Mediterranean, the breathtaking backdrop added to the allure of the occasion. Amidst a chorus of enthusiastic fans, the “Aquaman” star graciously acknowledged the support, amidst a lively atmosphere buzzing with paparazzi and curious onlookers.
Festival Organizers Take Precautions Amid Concerns, but Amber Heard Receives Overwhelming Support at “In the Fire” Premiere
Prior to the premiere of “In the Fire” at the Taormina Film Festival, there were concerns among the producers and organizers about potential demonstrations by Johnny Depp supporters. Pascal Borno, one of the producers, revealed that he had to convince the Italian police to provide extra security due to online threats. Borno humorously added that he promised the police selfies with Amber Heard, which helped in addressing the situation.
However, despite the initial apprehension, the atmosphere among the crowd exuded the usual excitement associated with celebrity events. A visiting family from New York, when approached by Variety, expressed their admiration for Heard’s courage, describing her as “gutsy.”
Heard’s co-star, Italian actor Luca Calvani (“The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”), shared his relief at witnessing the overwhelming support from the audience. He acknowledged the negativity and online hostility directed at Heard, emphasizing the significance of the positive reception she received at the premiere.
The production of “In the Fire” was marked by the shadow of the first trial in London in 2020, where Depp’s defamation suit was dismissed, and the second trial in Virginia in 2022, which caused Heard to temporarily leave the shoot in Guatemala to attend. The film was shot on location in Ostuni, Italy as well. Calvani expressed that the trial’s looming presence was palpable, and the camaraderie among the cast and crew served as a welcome distraction from the intense media scrutiny surrounding the case.
Amber Heard Expresses Gratitude for “In the Fire” and Highlights the Film’s Exploration of Love’s Extraordinary Influence
In a written response to Variety, Amber Heard shared her feelings about her involvement in “In the Fire,” albeit with the restriction of discussing Johnny Depp. She expressed her honor to be a part of the project and praised director Conor Allyn’s visionary approach. Heard also expressed her appreciation for the incredible cast, describing them as devoted and enchanting individuals who fully embody their characters.
Describing the film, Heard referred to it as a “meditation on the almost supernatural powers of love” and emphasized its focus on a strong-willed and independent woman living in the early 20th century.
Heard portrays Grace, a New York outsider who embarks on a journey to South America to work as a doctor. In her new environment, she encounters hostility stemming from both the volcanic landscape and her pioneering role as a female psychiatrist during the emergence of the science, shortly after Sigmund Freud’s initial publications.
Summoned to a remote Colombian farm, Grace is tasked with treating a young boy (Lorenzo McGovern) whom the locals, led by a charismatic Jesuit priest (Yari Gugliucci), believe to be possessed by the devil. The boy’s father, portrayed by Eduardo Noriega, initially treats Grace with disdain but eventually becomes won over by her.
Director Conor Allyn revealed that he first met Heard while working on a Colombian serial killer TV drama, which ultimately faced setbacks in 2022. When Heard read the script for “In the Fire,” she agreed to join the project—a “gothic Gaucho western”—once her commitments to “Aquaman 2” were fulfilled.
Allyn praised Heard’s remarkable presence during the shoot, describing her as a star who shined both in front of and behind the camera. He expressed his confidence in her abilities and noted the comfort he felt knowing that capturing her performance would yield exceptional results.
The extent to which “In the Fire” will divert attention from Heard’s legal affairs remains to be seen. However, Allyn and co-star Luca Calvani expressed their hopes for a triumphant return for Heard, with Calvani enthusiastically proclaiming her greatness, radiance, talent, and resilience.
Produced by Angel Oak Films, ILBE, and Paradox, “In the Fire” showcases Heard’s talents alongside her forthcoming appearance in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” scheduled for release later this year.
