Renowned actor and comedian Ewen MacIntosh, celebrated for his portrayal of “Big Keith” in the acclaimed television series The Office, has sadly passed away at the age of 50.
Best known for his role as the scotch egg-loving accountant Keith Bishop, MacIntosh’s comedic brilliance extended beyond the monotone answerphone message and the character’s dream of becoming a DJ. His talent graced other British comedies such as Miranda and Little Britain, solidifying his status as a versatile and beloved figure in the entertainment industry.
Upon hearing the news, Ricky Gervais, the creator of The Office, led the tributes on social media platforms, describing MacIntosh as “an absolute original.” Fans fondly remember Keith Bishop’s memorable moments, including dressing up as Ali G for Red Nose Day and shining in the unforgettable appraisal scene from season two’s episode Appraisals.
In The Office, MacIntosh’s character, Bishop, worked at the fictional paper company Wernham Hogg, leaving an indelible mark on the series, which first aired in 2001. Co-writer and co-director of the BBC comedy series, Stephen Merchant, paid heartfelt tribute to MacIntosh on Instagram, recalling the actor as “a lovely and uniquely funny man” who effortlessly stole every scene.
MacIntosh’s comedic prowess extended to various projects, including his role as Lionel in the 2017 British romantic comedy film Finding Fatimah and portraying “Buffet Man” in the final season of Ricky Gervais’ After Life. Matt Lucas praised MacIntosh’s sweetness, intelligence, and humor, while Rufus Jones acknowledged him as an “absolute pleasure of a guy” and a scene-stealer in TV comedy history.
Thinking of Ewen Macintosh today, who I’m reading has sadly left us. A familiar and hilarious member of the Edinburgh sketch scene when we all started, and went on to create one of the most iconic scene stealers in tv comedy history. An absolute pleasure of a guy.
