The much-anticipated two-part movie musical event, “Wicked,” unveiled its trailer during Super Bowl LVIII, providing a first glimpse into director Jon M. Chu’s fantastical world of Oz.
Starring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the trailer features Erivo’s haunting rendition of the ballad “Defying Gravity.”
The kaleidoscope of colors in the trailer showcases massive fields of flowing flowers, the iconic Emerald City, and other fantastical landscapes. Erivo’s Elphaba expresses a sense of empowerment, declaring, “It’s the Wizard who should be afraid of me,” while Grande’s Glinda encourages her not to fear.
Based on the Broadway musical, “Wicked” serves as a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” offering an alternate perspective on the events in Oz before Dorothy’s arrival. The story delves into Elphaba’s journey, exploring how she becomes the Wicked Witch of the West while navigating the challenges of being framed by the Wizard.
The star-studded cast includes Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, and Bowen Yang. According to Broadway World, “Wicked” stands as one of the most commercially successful musicals, grossing $14.8 million at the Broadway box office in the previous year.
“Wicked: Part 1” is scheduled to hit theaters on November 27, with “Wicked: Part 2” set to follow in late 2025. The cinematic adaptation promises to captivate audiences with its visually stunning portrayal of the beloved Broadway classic.
