Dana Carvey Shares Candid Insights on Coping with the Loss of Son Dex Carvey
In a poignant episode of the “Fly on the Wall” podcast co-hosted by Dana Carvey and comedian David Spade, the actor-comedian opened up about the grieving process following the tragic death of his son, Dex Carvey, late last year. Carvey had previously announced a professional hiatus after Dex’s passing in November, expressing the need to understand “what life looks like now that we are a family of 3.”
Speaking about the private journey he shares with his wife and surviving son, Carvey emphasized the importance of staying active and engaged in various activities, including hiking and attending church. “You just want to make sure that you keep moving,” he remarked during the heartfelt discussion.
Returning to the podcast was described by Carvey as a therapeutic step in his recovery. “It’s very healthy for me as I recover,” he explained, acknowledging the shared experience of pain and uncertainty that many people around the world face.
Dex Carvey, aged 32, passed away at his home on November 15, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. In an Instagram post the following day, Dana Carvey revealed that his “beloved son” died of an accidental drug overdose. In a joint statement with wife Paula Zwagerman, Carvey expressed their grief and shared memories of Dex’s diverse talents in music, art, filmmaking, and comedy.
The eldest son of the “Wayne’s World” star, Dex had pursued a career in comedy, even opening for his father’s 2016 Netflix standup special, “Dana Carvey: Straight White Male, 60.” Additionally, he co-founded the Third Wheel Comedy Club in Los Angeles, as indicated in his Instagram bio.
The Carvey family’s openness about Dex’s struggle with addiction serves as a heartfelt message to others grappling with similar challenges. In their joint statement, they extended their thoughts and prayers to anyone facing addiction, emphasizing their understanding and support for those dealing with this difficult journey.
“Doing this and riffing with you is going to be very healthy for me as I recover,” Dana Carvey told David Spade in their first podcast episode together since his son’s death.https://t.co/7vKqPFbnP4
