Canada Commits Nearly $30 Million in Aid for Gaza Following UNRWA Funding Pause
In a recent announcement, Canada’s Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussen, revealed that the country will be providing almost $30 million in aid to Gaza. This assistance, comprising water, food, and various humanitarian resources, comes in the wake of the temporary suspension of funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
The funds will be distributed among six international organizations, with Canadian non-governmental organizations also playing a crucial role. Among the recipients are prominent entities such as UNICEF, the United Nations Population Fund, the World Health Organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and the World Food Programme. Notably, the World Food Programme is set to receive the largest share, approximately close to $12 million, as outlined in a statement from Global Affairs Canada.
Minister Hussen emphasized Canada’s unwavering commitment to providing more assistance in times of crisis. He stated, “Since the very beginning of the crisis, our position has always been, and continues to be, centered on the firm belief that more assistance is needed, not less.” Hussen further expressed confidence in the ability of trusted humanitarian partners to ensure the funding reaches the most vulnerable populations.
The aid package encompasses various essential services, including protection services, emergency medical assistance, and other life-saving support. This commitment comes against the backdrop of allegations involving UNRWA workers in the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, prompting several nations, including Canada, to suspend funding to the agency.
The United States also ceased funding to UNRWA last week following these allegations. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, President Biden’s United Nations ambassador, called for “fundamental changes” within the agency before considering a resumption of funding. Acknowledging ongoing investigations, she emphasized the need for substantial reforms within UNRWA.
The move by Canada to send substantial aid to Gaza underscores its dedication to humanitarian efforts and addressing the needs of the affected population amidst the challenges faced by UNRWA.
