Although the biggest spike is yet to come, Spotify is already seeing Christmas music being less popular on the streaming platform this year. The Dutch listen about 18 percent less to Christmas music compared to last year, the music company reports.
The trend was already reflected in the charts. Mariah Carey’s Christmas classic ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ is ‘only’ in seventh place in the Single Top 100, while it was already at number 1 around this time last year. The 1994 song has been hitting the top for the past three years.
According to Spotify, ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ and ‘Last Christmas’ by Wham! the most popular Christmas songs. Ariana Grande completes the top three with ‘Santa Tell Me’. Worldwide the top 3 looks almost the same, only Michael Bublé is in third place with ‘It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas’. This song is in fourth place in the Netherlands.
