Sweden Formally Joins NATO, Strengthening Alliance in the Face of Regional Challenges
In a significant development, Sweden has officially become the 32nd member of the NATO military alliance, completing its accession process in Washington. The handover of documents occurred at a ceremony, marking the end of a two-year journey since Sweden’s application to join the alliance, which was prompted by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized the principles of “unity and solidarity” as the guiding lights for Sweden’s involvement in NATO. “Good things come to those who wait,” remarked US Secretary of State Blinken, expressing gratitude to Sweden for its resilience and acknowledging the strengthened defensive alliance.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg highlighted Sweden’s valuable contributions, stating that the nation brings “capable armed forces and a first-class defense industry,” further fortifying the alliance’s strength and security.
The path to NATO membership for Sweden faced obstacles, with two member countries initially blocking the request. Turkey’s veto, rooted in a dispute over Sweden’s alleged support for Kurdish separatists, was lifted in January of this year. Hungary, accusing Sweden of hostility, recently ratified the bid after delaying approval for months.
Reflecting on Sweden’s historical policy of non-alignment, Secretary Blinken noted that NATO expansion was not “foreordained” or “foreseeable.” Prime Minister Kristersson expressed humility and pride, committing to meet all expectations and sharing responsibilities with other allies.
Highlighting the seriousness of the regional security situation, Kristersson noted that Sweden’s decision to join NATO was driven by the need for both providing and gaining security. This move follows Finland’s formal accession in April last year, effectively doubling the length of NATO’s border with Russia.
A flag-raising ceremony at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Monday will mark Sweden’s official accession to the alliance, underscoring the country’s commitment to collective defense and regional stability.
