Billie Eilish Opens Up About Her Sexuality in Variety Cover Story and Red Carpet Interview
In a recent Variety cover story from November, Billie Eilish candidly shared her feelings about her sexuality, expressing that while she didn’t often relate to women, she was “physically attracted to them.” The revelation sparked discussions, leading to questions about whether she intentionally came out in the interview.
During the Variety’s Hitmakers event on December 2, Eilish, 21, walked the red carpet and addressed inquiries about her coming out. Surprisingly, she stated, “No, I didn’t. But I kind of thought ‘Wasn’t it obvious?’ I didn’t realize people didn’t know.” Eilish added that she doesn’t fully embrace the concept of coming out, expressing, “I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist’? I’ve been doing this for a long time and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.”
Despite not labeling her sexuality, Eilish emphasized that she is supportive of women, stating, “It’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know, but it’s cool that they know. I am for the girls.”
In her November Variety interview, Eilish discussed her struggles relating to women, acknowledging her deep connections with female friends and family. She revealed feeling both physically attracted to women and intimidated by their beauty and presence.
Eilish’s coming out revelation was not only a personal moment but also coincided with her recognition as a “changemaker” at Variety’s 2023 Power of Women event in Los Angeles. While visibly emotional during her speech, Eilish attributed her feelings to the steroid prednisone but took the opportunity to reflect on the challenges of womanhood.
“It’s really hard to be a woman out here, guys,” she expressed, sharing her journey of insecurity about fitting into societal expectations of womanhood. Acknowledging her past “pick me” attitude toward gender roles, Eilish expressed regret, emphasizing her newfound appreciation for being like other girls and her love for women.
Despite admitting to having “a lot of internalized misogyny,” Eilish expressed gratitude for her current position as a woman. Her openness about her sexuality aligns with a trend of celebrities, including Miley Cyrus, JoJo Siwa, Janelle Monáe, and Madison Bailey, who have courageously shared their journeys and identities with fans in recent years.
