Biden Accuses Trump of Threatening Democracy; Trump Labels Speech as Fearmongering
In a campaign speech delivered in Pennsylvania on Friday night, US President Joe Biden launched a scathing attack on his Republican rival, former President Donald Trump, accusing him of attempting to seize power through “political violence.” Biden likened Trump’s rhetoric to that of “Nazi Germany” and portrayed him as a direct threat to American democracy.
Highlighting the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, as a significant part of Trump’s legacy, Biden asserted that Trump’s campaign is centered on personal interests rather than the well-being of America. He accused Trump of being fixated on the past, willing to jeopardize democracy for personal gain, and described him as “sick” and a “loser.”
Biden contended that Trump and his supporters still endorse “political violence,” suggesting that Trump’s assault on democracy is not confined to the past but a peril for the future. Drawing a controversial parallel, Biden compared Trump to the Third Reich, citing Trump’s language of labeling opponents as “vermin” and discussing the poisoning of Americans’ blood.
Responding to Biden’s remarks, Trump dismissed the speech as a “pathetic fearmongering campaign event.” He criticized Biden for what he characterized as a record of weakness, incompetence, corruption, and failure in areas such as the border, inflation, military decisions, and international standing.
Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, accused Biden of being the “real threat to democracy,” alleging that the president was weaponizing the government against his political opponent and interfering in the 2024 election.
As the 2024 race gains momentum, Biden is facing declining approval ratings, ending the previous year at 39%, the lowest among the last seven presidents at the end of their first term. In contrast, Trump concluded his term with a 45% approval rating. Trump is currently entangled in legal battles in Maine and Colorado after being disqualified from their ballots, facing four separate criminal cases that he denounces as a political “witch hunt.”
