Ben Affleck will direct the film King Leopold’s Ghost . The actor and director has been working for several years on the film project about the crimes during the regime of the Belgian king Leopold II in nineteenth-century Congo, Deadline reports Thursday.
The film tells the story of the Congolese who resisted the atrocities of the Belgian monarch. A black American missionary, an English journalist and an Irish spy uncovered his crimes with photos and started the first human rights movement.
The fact-based project would first become a mini series. The makers now choose to make a film.
Affleck feels personally involved with the African region to which Congo belongs. The filmmaker is the founder of Eastern Congo Initiative, an organization that aims to speed up the economic and social situation in Eastern Congo.
