Adolf Hitler’s birthplace in Braunau Am Inn, Austria, is being converted into a police station, reports the Austrian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday. The Austrian government hopes that this will keep neo-Nazis away from the property.
Extreme right-wing circles hold an annual meeting on Hitler’s birthday in the vicinity of the place where the Nazi leader saw the light of day on April 20, 1889. He lived in the building for only one year, then Hitler’s family moved to Linz.
A discussion was also being held in the country to demolish the house, but the Austrian government wanted to prevent this because otherwise “a loaded piece of history” would disappear.
To ban neo-Nazis from now on, three years ago the former owner of the building was expropriated by the Austrian State. She was told earlier this year that she should be compensated for more than 800,000 euros.
An architectural competition must show what the building will look like. Architects from the European Union must submit their design within the first six months of 2020, after which a jury with representatives from the village, among others, makes a decision.
