Adam Sandler Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Late Co-Star Carl Weathers
In a somber announcement on February 2, the family of former NFL player and actor Carl Weathers confirmed his passing at the age of 76, revealing that he died peacefully in his sleep. Weathers, renowned for his roles in both film and sports, was warmly remembered by his co-star and friend, Adam Sandler.
The duo shared the screen in the 1996 comedy “Happy Gilmore,” where Weathers portrayed the character Chubbs, a former professional golfer who befriends Sandler’s character. Reflecting on their time together, Sandler took to his social media platforms on February 2, describing Weathers as a “true great man” who was not only a fantastic actor and athlete but also a devoted father. Sandler fondly reminisced about the joyous moments shared with Weathers and extended his love and condolences to the late actor’s family.

Julie Bowen, another co-star from “Happy Gilmore,” joined in the tribute, expressing her affection for Weathers on Instagram. “Dearest Carl, you’ll always be my Chubbs. What a glorious spirit you had. Thanks for making me smile. I hope they golf wherever you are,” Bowen wrote.
Weathers gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Apollo Creed in the initial four “Rocky” films. Even after Creed’s on-screen demise in “Rocky IV” (1985), the character continued to influence subsequent movies and the “Creed” franchise, where Michael B. Jordan takes on the role of Apollo Creed’s son, carrying on the legacy in the boxing ring.
In a statement, Weathers’ family celebrated his remarkable life and multifaceted contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports. Describing him as an “exceptional human being,” the family acknowledged the indelible mark he left, resonating worldwide and across generations. Weathers will be remembered not only as a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend but also as a true legend in the realms of entertainment and athletics.
