An investigation is being conducted by the British police to determine if a fine should be imposed on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for not wearing a seatbelt while in a moving vehicle.
The incident came to light after Sunak filmed a video in the car and shared it on social media.
The BBC reported that Lancashire Police intended to issue a suspended fine to a 42-year-old man in London.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak apologized for the incident, stating it was a “error of judgement”.
Passengers not wearing seatbelts when available may face a fine of £100 on the spot, which could increase to £500 if the case goes to court.
Scot Benton, a Tory MP for Blackpool South, urged the police not to investigate “politically motivated” allegations of seatbelt use.
Downing Street emphasized that the police are independent and make their own decisions on how to operate. A spokesman stated that the Prime Minister’s failure to wear a seatbelt was a mistake and an apology was made because it is important for people to wear their seatbelts.
Apologies for not wearing a seatbelt, but I thought that rule only applied to other people and not to us. You know, like all the other rules.#LevellingUpFundpic.twitter.com/ZzFmiHcgFL
