A 6-year-old boy shot his teacher at an elementary school in the US state of Virginia. The woman, in her thirties, was seriously injured and is in a critical condition in hospital. The six-year-old student was taken away by the police.
The shooting incident happened in a first-grade classroom after “an altercation,” US media report. It is not known what preceded the altercation. The head of the school district says an investigation has been launched. “This is terrible. We want to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.”

Richneck Elementary School in the City of Newport News has 550 students. They were all evacuated.
It is unclear how the boy was able to take the firearm to school and who it belongs to. The primary school had metal detector gates.
The mayor of the town, Phillip Jones, says the incident has touched his heart. “This is a dark day but we will learn from this and come back stronger,” said Jones.
The school is closed for the time being. Students and staff receive aftercare.
